Esta especie es territorial, cuando se siente amenazado abre los opérculos y la membrana de la garganta, es una especie omnívora, puede alcanzar un tamaño de 15 cm de longitud y su estimado de vida es de 10 años.

Amatitlania nigrofasciata (ciclido convicto) es un especie perteneciente a la familia Cichlidae. Tiene una coloración de fondo gris con franjas verticales negras aunque en época de celo las hembras adquieren un tono naranja en su vientre y azul en las aletas. Su comportamiento es pacifico con otras especies agresivas aunque cuando están en época de reproducción se tornan territoriales y agresivos ademas es relativamente sencilla, por lo cual no se recomienda tener una pareja reproductiva en un acuario comunitario.
